When Portia arrived at Bramble House, she found Austin and Zavy under the same tree as yesterday. Austin had moved on to a different book this time, a book of poems called Where the Sidewalk Ends.

Austin looked hotter than ever in faded jeans with one worn knee and a navy T-shirt that kissed the contours of his well-muscled physique. Had he done nothing but lift weights all year?

“Sorry to be blunt.” She began unbuttoning her blouse as she sank onto the blanket. “But I really need to feed Zavy. Now.” Her milk was already releasing. Sometimes just the sight of Zavy, or the sound of his cries, could do that.

“Of course.” Austin handed over their son, then immediately rose and moved away toward the vegetable patch.

“Eliza is planning to dig up the potatoes and carrots tomorrow. I told her I’d help—in the morning, before our walk.”

Portia suspected he was babbling to take his mind off the fact that she’d just bared her breast in full daylight. Zavy had no problems with it, though. He latched on immediately and began drinking like he’d been starved. For decorum’s sake, she grabbed a flannel blanket and used it to cover the action.

“He’s so hungry. Did you give him his two o’clock bottle?”

“Yeah, he gobbled it up. Went through three diapers, two of them poopy.”

No wonder Austin had used up all the wipes. “Must be having a growth spurt.”

“Yeah? That’s cool.”

“I got the new wipes. They’re in my purse. The woman who works at the pharmacy is quite the gossip. It seems everyone in town knows who you are and why you’re here.”

“The secret was out yesterday. I’m not surprised it spread fast. This is the kind of stuff people lap up, right? I mean, if I wasn’t involved personally, I’d find it interesting, too. This woman whose been working in town for an entire year and has a baby suddenly turns out to have a husband. That’s pretty juicy stuff.”

The sarcasm in his voice gave Portia the shivers. The Austin she knew did not talk this way.

She switched Zavy to her other breast, then adjusted the flannel blanket accordingly. Time to change the subject. “I called the Graff today, and guess what? The ballroom is available, and they’re giving us great terms. Plus, Gretchen at BigSky Promotions is on board to design the promotional materials. She’s a real artist, we’re lucky to get her.”

“Great, that’s good progress. Wish I could claim the same. I called about a dozen of my rodeo pals. Quite a few are interested, but only two have committed so far.”

“Two is a start.”

The sound of leaves crunching underfoot announced the approach of someone new. Portia turned slowly so she wouldn’t disturb Zavy. Her mom’s cousin Eliza was heading toward the garden, basket in hand. Eliza’s light blonde hair was pulled into a ponytail, and her skin had the sun-kissed look that usually meant she’d been out hiking with her husband.

“Hey there.” Eliza paused the moment she noticed them. “Portia, what a picture you make, nursing Zavy under the golden canopy of that ash tree.
